Movie Bad Apples

We all know teachers have it tough, especially when one of their students constantly disrupts the whole class. Primary teacher Maria (Saoirse Ronan) is at her wits end after struggling for months with rebellious Danny (Eddie Waller).

One night she discovers Danny trashing cars and, in an attempt, to stop him he ends up injured. Doing the right thing she puts him in her car and heads towards the hospital. But when Danny stirs, he suggests he’ll tell a different story, one which could see her lose everything. What to do?

In a moment of panic she takes Danny home to her place while she thinks about her next move, but Danny’s behaviour escalates and she ends up locking Danny inside her home.

With the community out looking for Danny, Maria knows she has to own up but as the weeks go by it gets more challenging.

When the school inspectors come to visit, they single Maria out for having a thriving, well managed classroom. Her students love the hassle-free environment and the parents love the results their children are achieving.

As the audience laughed out loud I pondered:

  1. The movie touches on work life balance, mental health, peer group pressure and whether two wrong moves make a right;
  2. The movie will have you squirming in your seat, second guessing how you feel about the politically incorrect action on screen;
  3. The reprieve comes nearer the end as the whole audience exhaled and laughed as one;
  4. Ronan and Waller were excellent;
  5. Definitely one for teachers.
