Movie Review: We Live In Time

Just when you think you’ve seen all the ways a romantic comedy can deal with grief, along comes We Live In Time. Andrew Garfield’s’ performance will melt your heart.

We Live In Time

We Live In Time the movie tells the story of Almut (Florence Pugh), a young chef who’s achieving great things. She’s on the cusp of the world being her oyster, steamed in garlic butter, ginger and soya sauce.

One night on the way home she runs into Tobias (Andrew Garfield) and her life changes forever.

Just like the structure of the movie, their relationship doesn’t follow the usual rules. Facing a life-altering illness, Almut must decide whether to take up the treatment or embrace what time remains.

As the audience gathered their belongs and quietly left the theatre I pondered:

  1. While the movie asks a common question about making the most of your life when time is running out, the unique approach will keep you intrigued;
  2. The structure of the movie can be confusing at times, until you think of it as a random collection of memories;
  3. Pugh delivers a solid performance as an ambitious woman, but Garfield steals the screen with his quiet take on Tobias. The way Tobias looks at Almut will melt your heart. His performance serves as a reminder that less can be more;
  4. The movie could do without the blatant Jerry McGuire scene;
  5. Your enjoyment of the movie will differ depending on your own personal experience with illness and grief.
