Anora, is part Pretty Woman romance, part mafia crime movie with a generous amount of laughs along the way. One not to miss.
Ani (Mikey Madison) is a young girl making her way in Brooklyn as an exotic dancer/sex worker. Things are going well.
Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn) is a good-looking young guy on a night out with friends. With cash to splash he goes to Ani’s club for a good time. But he has a specific request. He wants a girl who speaks Russian. Ani is the only one who can fill that need.
Although her Russian is clumsy it does the job for Vanya, though not as much as her other skills. After a great night he books her for the next night, this time at his place.
His place turns out to be a mansion, and he the son of a Russian billionaire. The date soon turns into a week of acting as his girlfriend, which one night turns into a spontaneous marriage in Vegas. Ani kisses her old job goodbye ready for a brand new life.
Things take a turn when Vanya’s parents find out. They send their henchmen to get the marriage annulled.
As the crowd laughed out loud I pondered:
- Anora is a fun ride. The henchmen chapter alone is hilarious. Think Keystone Cops, mafia style.
- Madison is riveting as both a vixen and a kickass woman who knows what she needs to do to survive;
- Edyelshteyn is suitably annoying as a rich spoilt brat;
- Definitely worth a putting on the list.
Starts December 26, with advance screenings early December.
