If you like your Hugh Grant deliciously creepy you’ll love his latest movie, Heretic, where he takes you on a journey to uncover the one true religion.
Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) are two young missionaries working through their list of potential converts. The list includes Mr Reed (Hugh Grant).
As luck would have it, as they knock on his door the brewing storm worsens. Drenched the girls are delighted to see the door open. They’re even more delighted when Mr Reed gives off friendly schoolteacher vibes and seems receptive to their message. He invites them in, an invitation they accept under the proviso that there’s a woman in the house. Assuring them his wife will join them, they step inside.
While he appears curious and enthusiastic, the girls feel uneasy that his wife is taking a long time to join them. He assures them she will be in once she finishes baking a pie.
As the discussion continues it becomes clear that he’s far more aware of the intricacies of their religion than most. When he starts to challenge the fundamentals of their belief, the girls suggest they leave. Even though the doors are locked Mr Reed assures them they’re free to go, but then they wouldn’t find out his secret … that he knows the one true religion.
The movie gives you a lot to ponder:
- A dialogue heavy tale, the movie demands you pay attention;
- Deliciously, deceptively wicked Grant gives a masterful performance. While I always liked him in the romances, I absolutely love his more recent diabolical characters;
- Grant is a perfect example of why actors shouldn’t get botox;
- Barnes and Paxton do a fantastic job in support;
- If, like me, you’re not into horror don’t panic. The movie is more thriller than horror. There were only two parts where I looked away;
- There were also two parts near the ended that jolted the timeline but just let that go;
- The movie will challenge your beliefs and ultimately asks the question, what would you do to find out the one true religion?
