Movie Review: Memory

A movie about a woman who can’t forget and a man who can’t remember was intriguing enough to get me along to the theatre. The good acting kept me there.

Memory

When we meet Sylvia (Jessica Chastain) it’s clear something has happened in her past. There’s the AA meetings and the triple locked door and alarm system at home. While we have no idea what it is, it’s clearly something she can’t forget.

Little wonder then that she gets upset when a man follows her home from her school reunion. This is in contrast to her day job where she works as a social worker at an adult daycare centre. There she seems completely in control.

The man in question is Saul (Peter Sarsgaard) who was at school with her, albeit a few years ahead of her. Saul’s life has been turned upside down with a dementia diagnosis. While Sylvia can’t forget, Saul can’t remember.

As we watch their lives become more and more entwined I pondered:

  1. The movie explores the secrets families keep;
  2. Chastain is good as the stitched up Sylvia;
  3. Sarsgaard shines as Saul without falling into the usual stereotypes;
  4. The slow pace won’t be for everyone, but the movie is a good Sunday afternoon type movie.
