Movie Review: Wicked Little Letters

0

Quite simply Wicked Little Letters is the best movie of the year so far, and a perfect one to see the day after International Women’s Day. Make sure you see it.

Wicked Little Letters

Set in 1920s Littlehampton spinster Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) lives with her parents. Life trundles along with predictable regularity, until Edith starts receiving letters. Everyone loves getting letters but not letters like these.

The expletive-laden letters increase in regularity and start spreading across the town. Trouble is they’re anonymous.

The Law is pulled in to investigate and Edith helps by pointing out the similarities in language to that used by her annoying, brash, neighbour Irish migrant Rose (Jessie Buckley).

When Rose is arrested, the community place the wronged Edith on a pillar. However a young female police officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) is not so sure. She and a small band of women set up their own investigation.

As the audience clapped and cheered at the end of the movie I pondered:

  1. What perfect casting;
  2. There’s no way to single out anyone. Colman, Buckley, Vasan, Timothy Spall, Joanna Scanlan, Hugh Skinner, Lolly Adefope and Eileen Atkins are all perfect;
  3. How wonderful to laugh out loud at some much political incorrectness;
  4. The movie is a reminder of how far we’ve come, touching on misogyny and hypocrisy;
  5. Most of all it shows what can happen when you keep your feelings trapped inside;
  6. Perfect to the very last comment.
