The Ferrari movie is a fascinating look into the car industry and the all-consuming competitive drive it takes to get to the top,
The movie focuses on Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) as he tries to keep his company afloat. Actually, it’s more accurate to say that his wife Laura (Penelope Cruz) is the one focused on the books, Ferrari is only interested in the cars, his “deadly passion”.
Set in 1957, the company has been operating for ten years and the competition is building. In order to keep his dream alive Ferrari hangs everything on one major race, the iconic Mille Migila. It’s a win at all costs situation.
As the competitors take off Ferrari is also facing another crisis. His marriage has been in a downward spiral since the death of his son, a subject he and his wife dance around.
But that’s not all, when I said Ferrari was only interested in his cars that wasn’t strictly true, he was also focused on his mistress. More importantly whether to acknowledge their son or let the Ferrari name die out.
As the cars raced around the track for one last time I pondered:
- Cruz shone as the woman scorned, she makes the movie;
- The old cars are so stylish, it makes you ponder about the progression to today’s designs. The actors must have had a ball in them;
- Some of the accents are a bit dodgy and the inclusion of Patrick Dempsey is hard to believe even with his blonde hair;
- It was great to see Jack O’Connell pop up, albeit briefly;
- A fun way to spend a hot day.
