Movie Review: Red, White and Brass

0

If you liked Full Monty feel good style movies and anything from the producers of Hunt For The Wilderpeople, you’ll probably already have a ticket for this one. Red, White and Brass is a heartwarming story worth checking out, especially if you like rugby, and it’s based on a true story!

Red, White and Brass

Set in Wellington in the run down to the 2011 Rugby World Cup we meet Maka (John-Paul Foliaki). Maka is passionate about two things family and rugby, particularly the Tongan rugby team. In four weeks his beloved team will take on France in the Rugby World Cup. There’s just one problem, the tickets have sold out.

But all is not lost. There is one way in.

The event organisers are looking for a brass band for the pre-match entertainment. Maka has a plan.

Maka gathers together this friends and family to explain the plan. Naturally they’re skeptical especially as most of them have no musical experience and their only instruments are plastic bottles and tin cans. Still they push on.

As they start to make progress they find out the Tongan community elders are staunchly against this potentially embarrassing stunt. I won’t spoil it for you.

Red, White and Brass the movie is a fun ride the movie had me pondering:

  1. Foliaki is an absolute delight;
  2. It’s hard to believe this is based on a true story;
  3. It’s a big reminder to stay true to yourself.
