7 Days the movie is a warm delight. A light hearted romantic comedy that reminds us about what’s important in life, oh and the Covid lockdowns. Keep an eye out for it during the Perth Festival 2023. Would make a great Valentine’s Day movie.
Ravi (Karan Soni) is a good Indian son who has been unlucky in love. Not to worry his mum has many options for him. One such option is Rita (Geraldine Viswanathan). The two meet for an outdoor picnic in an unusual setting. They get on reasonably well but while on the picnic their phones blow up with texts that suggest something major is happening in the world.
Back at Rita’s house when Ravi tries to organise a ride home he encounters a problem. No cars. A similar problem arises when he searches for a hotel room. Reluctantly Rita suggests he stay the night on the couch.
But things don’t go smoothly. A mistimed moment suggests Rita may not be the non-drinking, vegetarian she initially made out to be. It’s fairly clear that they are not a good match.
Enter the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both Rita and Ravi are forced to stay at Rita’s place, indoors for 7 days.
7 Days, was written and shot in a week, a week! And during the first months of the pandemic. Both Soni and Viswanathan gives us characters we can quickly get invested in. The movie touches on Indian traditions, love, loneliness, soul mates, family bonds, being true to oneself and much more.
As I found myself laughing out loud I pondered:
- The movie touches on a well known subject of arranged marriages without having to fall back on to the usual stereotypes. So refreshing;
- Such a simple premise, so well done;
- It is a great reminder of the pandemic days;
- I can’t believe the movie was written and shot in a week. Once again it goes to show that you don’t need a massive budget and loads of effects;
- The movie is from a first-time filmmaker Roshan Sethi, with Soni also part of the writing team. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for what’s next.
