The Scandinavian Film Festival starts in Perth on July 24 and I managed to see the much heralded noir crime thriller, The Keeper of Lost Causes. The script was written by Nikolaj Arcel (the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and A Royal Affair) which may give you some idea of what awaits.

After a bungled stakeout that leaves one of his partners paralysed and the other dead, Police Inspector Carl Morck finds himself assigned to Department Q. Located in the bowels of the station it’s clear that his mistake, along with his inability to get along with anyone, have cost him dearly. He’ll see out his days working through a mountain of old cold cases. Could life get any worse? Evidently it could.

It soon becomes clear that he’s not meant to reopen any of the cases, merely review them and tick the box. Even worse, he’s been assigned an assistant, Assad, which does not sit well with him.
On day one he comes across a file which outlines the disappearance of a well-known female politician, Merete Lyngaard, five years earlier. It’s thought that she jumped or fell over the edge on a passenger ferry. But Morck questions the ruling of suicide, especially as she was traveling with her brain-damaged brother.

Morck and Assad soon come to rely on each other, as they enter Copenhagen’s underworld in an attempt to solve the puzzle, including whether Lyngaard might still be alive.

The movie is an adaptation of the bestselling Department Q crime novel series by Jussi Adler-Olsen. If you liked The Bridge or The Tunnel you’ll really enjoy this movie. There are two parts where you might want to look away for a moment, but that’s because of the brilliant acting. It’s an excellent noir thriller that keeps you looking at the screen the whole time in case you miss something.

Aside from thoroughly enjoying the movie, and getting flashbacks in the days that followed, the movie also left me pondering … how wonderful it would be to be able to write something like that. For more details see below. Another movie that looks like it will be good is The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared.
