Being invited into the photographers pit at a music concert was a first for me. As we four were ushered into the pit, we were told we could film the first three songs. There was a bit of confusion about whether this included the warm up songs, but that’s a tale for another post. I had assumed that the playlist would run through the contestants in order, leaving the winner to the end and a group medley as a finale. It was a pleasant surprise to find this was not the case.
First up was past Voice contestant Prinnie Stevens, who did a good job at warming up the crowd, before handing over to the Top 8 (sadly ZK were a man down). This order was so much better than having the usual wait to get to see your favourite.

Winner Anja Nissen took to the stage in a sparkly blue dress, which was quickly overshadowed by her beaming winners smile and clear, powerful voice.

Next up, crowd favourite Johnny Rollins singing When A Man Loves A Woman which melted all the XX chromosome hearts in the audience, and probably a few XY ones too.

With such polished performances it was easy to forget that only a few months ago these artists had been restricted to singing in their bathrooms. It makes you wonder what other talents are hiding away behind suburban loofahs.
- The most delightful part of the evening was seeing that the newness of it all hadn’t been lost on the contestants. There were a few wonderful moments when some contestants finished singing and then broke into giggles, as they walked offstage.
- It was also great to find that the audience was focused on listening to the music rather than being part of a squealfest. Prior to going I’d pondered about taking earplugs.
- The only negative was the clarity of the music at some points, but I’m not a music technician so probably shouldn’t comment too much on that.
- While there’s no way you’d get me singing on stage, the experience of being in the photographers pit was a real thrill for me. It meant I could cross off a goal that was so far off my radar, it hadn’t even made it onto any list. When I received the invitation I could easily have stayed at home watching any number of shows on TV. Having run a Personal Branding workshop the day before, my body was certainly calling out for some rest, but I’m so pleased I decided to take up the challenge. Thanks to Channel Nine for the opportunity, and to my fellow pit dwellers for being so accepting of a newbie.
- So should you go for you goal? Definitely, unless it would hurt you or someone else. When times get tough you can always think about your favourite Voice contestant for inspiration.

Wow. What a thrill. Makes me want to continue to serenade the characters over the fence when taking a shower. Better have pity on them.
It’s great to see our local talent getting recognised.
Oh no what have I done!!! Remember, as the judges say on The Voice … song choice is everything.
Great post Glennys. You should definitely go for your goals and try new things … there’s no time for regrets.
Many thanks for commenting James. Your are right, the realisation that there’s ‘no time for regrets’ is what kick started The Ponder Room and this unusual way of life. I had thought I should add in ‘as long as you don’t hurt anyone’ but hopefully people will realise that’s what I mean.
