Movie Review: The Commuter

Next time you’re on a public commute to work think about the people around you. Perhaps you notice the regulars. Maybe you even chat to some, even know their names. If you’re a writer, like many of us, you’ll probably have made up stories about their lives. How accurate are you? What if your life depended on it? The Commute is a heart thumping mystery taking place during a single train trip.

Thanks to The Commuter

Michael MacCauley (Liam Neeson) is a family man, an ex policeman turned insurance salesman and a regular train commuter. He has a mortgage. He and his wife are trying to work out how to afford sending their son to college. Then he gets fired. On his train ride home a stranger gives him a proposition.

Do one small thing that won’t affect you but will affect others and you will receive $100,000.

Will he or won’t he?

Find the person who does not fit. That’s it.

What if his family is in danger if he says no?

As the previously silent audience laughed out loud I pondered:

  1. When you read that a movie stars Liam Neeson and the premise is his character has to do something otherwise his family will be killed, you do tend to think, maybe I’ve already seen this. But Liam Neeson has never let us down.
  2. The Commuter is no exception to this rule. The movie is a heart thumper of a drama which you shouldn’t miss.
  3. Throw in Sam Neil as a police commander and you’ll be back and forth about who the baddie is.
