The beach at Trigg Island has always been a great ‘Me Time’ hang out, and the upgraded Kailis restaurant has only added to that. The venue offers a range of sitting and dining experiences, and on the day I went I experienced its two faces.
First up the kiosk on the side of the restaurant where people can wander in wearing bathers and half removed wetsuits. Inside is counter service offering the usual fish and chip options plus burgers and coffee.
The fish was fresh, meaty and a decent size. The first bite had me heading to the salt and vinegar station. In a nice twist the meal is not salted so you can add to taste. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the meal given the price tag of around $12. The free tartare sauce was a great edition, making the whole thing great value.
The area was spotless and without the usual greasy fat smell accompanying many chip shops. I was also pleased that they had a copy of the mornings newspaper. There’s seating inside and out, the inside share tables fostered some friendly interactions.
Later that day as the sun went down I ventured into the restaurant section for coffee and chai. Once again there was a range of sitting options, tables or booths. Again I was surprised by the size of the serving, a large piece of carrot cake on a very small plate.
As the surfers took their final turns out on the waves I pondered …
- The makeover is a vast improvement on the old restaurant and the interim one. A beautiful space to relax or chat in.
- The warm tones and fireplace make the space a wonderful winter haven.
- While the cake was excellent, at about $8 I’d have preferred the option of a smaller piece for half the price.
- Can’t wait to go back and try the Seafood Platter which looked brilliant.
