Review: Surprises at 150 East restaurant

I must admit that when pondering somewhere to go for a special lunch I rarely think about restaurants attached to hotels. Last week my dinner companions suggested 150 East, which is one such restaurant located at Assured Ascot Apartment Hotel hmmm.

Driving past unit city on Great Eastern Highway on the way to the airport my resolve was starting to wane. Were we going to a local lunchbar? Parking at the door and walking into the hotel foyer gave nothing away. But then we entered the restaurant, received a friendly greeting and were shown to our table. The waitress suggested we take a table away from a large group who would be arriving soon. This proved to be excellent advice.

The first thing I was surprised by was the view. The restaurant backs onto the Swan River and it wasn’t long before nature began its show.

The service continued in an extremely professional, personable and timely manner which was no mean feat considering they were one down.

The food?

One guest picked the pork belly and when the meal came to the table we were all stunned. We’d anticipated two small squares of pork but these were doorstops. But size is nothing if the taste is poor right? Thankfully this was not the case, the pork was quickly devoured and then described as perfectly cooked and containing a lot of succulent pork not just fat.

My other guest chose the salmon, as is often the case so she knows a thing or two about salmon, and it too was described as perfectly cooked.

I had the beer batter fish with chips and salad and was immediately asked if I’d prefer the fish grilled. Was the waitress reading my mind as I was just thinking that half way through I usually regret all the batter. Perhaps the chef felt sorry for me and added extra chips hidden under the fish as there were more than enough for all of us to share.

Dessert was replaced with coffee as there was no way we could eat another bite. It was nice to be allowed to sit and chat about the wonderful meal we’d eaten without feeling that the staff wanted us to leave.

Food tick, service tick, atmosphere tick as we left the restaurant there were only three things to ponder…

  1. When can I go back and try out the outdoor area?
  2. I highly recommend this one, especially during the week when it is less busy.
  3. Thank god I don’t live in one of the unit blocks nearby, I’d be forever jumping on the scales.
