Recently I was tempted to let out a gladiatorial inspired ‘throw them to the lions’ plea, as a five year olds decibel defying tantrum, set off two previously angelic babies in my local café. I wasn’t alone as others, mum’s included, clearly thought an extended stint in the dungeon was warranted. Trying to focus on the positive and offer up a solution rather than just scowling, I was all ready to hand over the chips on my plate in the hope that the child gods would acknowledge my patience, when for some reason a smile spread across my face, as I pondered National Bookshop Day and miraculously the noise dimmed.

Saturday August 11th is National Bookshop Day and one store, Beaufort Street Books, has decided to honour the day by offering free child tastings for lions. Oh sorry that should be free book readings, drawing competitions and photos taken INSIDE a lion, for children, there that sounds better … although …
The author appearing on Saturday will be James Foley (see poster at the end of this post for details).
Backing up his success with The Last Viking, (see link) local author James Foley has gone solo and published his second children’s book called In The Lion, through Walker Books.
The story begins….
In the city there’s a zoo. In the zoo there’s a lion. And in the lion, there’s ….
Described as a darkly humourous picture book, it is about a boy who visits the zoo with his family, only to find an enormous lion is swallowing everything and everyone. Who will save them?
The book has already proved very popular at school readings with the children pondering all manner of things that could be inside the lion. For example James says he’s heard …
a toilet, the Eiffel Tower (in which direction I’m not sure), a school bus (no mention of whether it was empty or full), and an entire football oval with a match being played, to name a few. Clearly some of childrens answers leave you pondering about what’s happening at home … or maybe that’s just me.
National Bookshop Day Saturday August 11th, Beaufort Street Books 567 Beaufort Street Mt Lawley WA 10-4pm. Bookings required for the reading sessions.
