New pricing strategy reaps just desserts at Taste Perth 2015 part 3

As I watch the Taste Perth tents being packed away for another year I remember the balmy night drawing to a close, and my final sampling plates … dessert.

Thankfully I had enough money on my card for two desserts. I’d started with $50 and so far had tasted two brilliantly satisfying savoury dishes (see previous posts). More importantly the portion sizes meant I had two small spaces left in my tummy for something sweet.

As soon as I came through the door I saw that Lalla Rookh had fried custard on the menu. That set the tone for the whole night as having tried it once before there was no way I was going to miss out on another chance. Warm, crunchy and creamy this version only cemented the dessert as one of my favourites. The side serve of candied citrus and toasted almonds helped cut through the sweetness. I was very pleased that the serve wasn’t too large as it meant I could try one other dish that I’d spied during my initial sweep of the festival.

Mary Street Bakery offered something I never thought I’d try. A baked donut with peanut butter, jam and crunch. As I bit into the crunchy outside and the peanut butter mixture danced on my tongue, visions of Elvis Presley flashed through my mind for some reason. It was an absolute delight and something I now wish I’d experienced earlier in my life, although on second thoughts perhaps it’s just as well I hadn’t.

Sadly my stomach said no to the Tiramisu on offer from Modo Mio, and so with money left on my card I took home a box of macarons from Maison St Honore.

Today as I put on the kettle and settle in for the coconut macaroon I ponder …

  1. While Friday night was a wonderful night I really felt for the organisers when the weather turned nasty on Saturday and Sunday. Why put the event on at this time of year when the likelihood of rain is so high? If it was held mid April even more people would get to enjoy this fantastic smorgasbord of top class Perth restaurants.
  2. The organisers should be congratulated for changing the pricing strategy this year as it meant you could try more meals.
  3. More importantly how will I live my life without peanut butter and jam donut? See you all at Mary’s.
