Let the escapism begin … please (Cirque du Soleil in Perth 2013)

As I drove home from the movie preview the other night, I rounded the corner and literally cried out … it’s here, it’s finally here! The tickets have been pinned to the wall for around 18 months, a photocopy left with friends just incase. Finally it’s time for some much needed Cirque du Soleil escapism.

My first Cirque experience was with Saltimbanco many, many years ago, where upon leaving the Grand Chapiteau, I spied a small piece of paper that said they were looking for marketing staff. Younger, fitter, with no immediate responsibilities, and a lingering memory of thick, greasy, stage makeup in my past, I did actually contemplate running away to join the circus … once.

Instead I became even more entrenched in the Corporate Circus, where juggling, spinning, plummeting and death spirals, had a very different meaning. Although to be fair they did still elicit open mouthed gasps on most occasions.

Parking on the empty street I pondered, as I did every time Cirque touched down, how different my life might have been, had I had the courage to apply (and the marketing skills required ofcourse).

From memory, back then it was a big deal that some of the performers lived in converted sea containers behind the Grand Chapiteau. I vaguely remembered pondering whether I’d actually be able to give up my stock standard, ground floor 2×1 hidden nest. A sanctuary that had taken me several years, and many, many months of eating tinned tuna, to save enough to buy it. Now ofcourse sea container apartments are quite common place, especially on remote sites.

No doubt I’ll ponder this alternative life once again as I step inside the tent this year, and who knows I might even take along an application form, although I don’t like my chances, what do you think …

older, wiser, marketing employee … recent mini trampoline and baby weights experience.

  2. Hi Michelle, I have my fingers crossed for you that it might still be a surprise :). In the meantime have you tried performing your own version at home infront of the TV while the footy’s on … he might do anything to get you to stop … worth a try 🙂
