Regular readers will know about my interest in community engagement strategies that foster positive community spirit and sense of place. The Beaufort Street Network has already been singled out as a collective to watch, and this week Beaufort Street provided me with another reason to keep watching this space. This time I believe it’s thanks to the Council of Vincent …

As Foundation Day, or WA Day as it’s now called ended, I made my way along the Beaufort Street restaurant strip. Silhouetted by the soft setting sun I spied a fit young couple wending their way home on a tandem bike and they got me pondering …

- The female riders camera suggests they’re out-of-towners, but where from?
- The male riders intensity suggests maybe they didn’t intend to be out on the street after a certain hour. Perhaps his girlfriend was being chased by a pack of Northbridge hounds and he rescued her, only to set them off on a Bonny and Clyde style existance.
- How long until this pair becomes victim to random clothing attacks, like the swan river diver? Actually one of the nearby shop owners said this has already happened, and the pair have only been in place for a week (hence the bunting still around them)
- Their arrival means we can truly be proud of Perth’s multiculturalism …not only do we welcome all cultures, but interbreed species as well … or so it seems.
- Evidently the piece has received mixed reaction and caused some discussion amongst the community, which is the point of street art really isn’t it?
- How much the Beaufort Street strip is starting to resemble Brunswick Street in Melbourne.
How proud Creative Communities David Engwicht would be, if he knew how we were progressing, I hope he finds out.
I hope you get to see this one soon, the workmanship is wonderful, the dogs face in particular suggests so many possibilities. Congratulations to the artists Gillie and Marc who captured the ‘only in Beaufort Street’ brief beautifully. Made of bronze the areas that get touched the most will turn golden over time (no need to guess which those will be). More of their work can be found at http://www.gillieandmarc.com/.
Thanks should also go to the City of Vincent and Alanah MacTiernan who discribed it as ‘a bit out there’ , for helping to make life more enjoyable.
If you know of any other street projects please let me know.

What a unique and fun couple! I hope to run into them soon…
I agree brilliant.
Perhaps the dog is looking woried as he contemplates the traffic in Beauford Street – especially approaching Walcott Street.Graeme P
Yep louise, they don’t seem to be going anywhere fast so I think you’ll be right. They look great when the sun is going down
🙂 Graeme I did ponder whether they would slow the traffic, although as it’s probably already stopped they might sooth those waiting in line … better than staring at red tail lights
