Tonight as people swarm over the Sydney Opera House to celebrate its 40th birthday, I am left pondering … five things this glorious icon has taught me about turning 40 gracefully.

- Set high standards, associate yourself with quality.
- Don’t restrict yourself to one group, open your doors to everyone, and then decide who to invite back.
- Don’t be afraid to try something new, and move with the times e.g. the recent light shows have given the House a new lease on life
- Be patient your time will come. Nobody could have been more patient than the original designer who, having been outcast from the country, is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
- Above all, have fun along the way.

If that all seems a tad too hard … tell Wolervine to drop by, and have a large vat of pollyfiller on standby just incase.
