Taking things for granted in Sydney

I’ll start this post with a quick apology to regular readers who may have noticed that I was missing in action last week, but I have a very good excuse …

An interesting piece of consumer psychology research saw me winging my way to Melbourne late Saturday night and then to Sydney on Tuesday, before returning home on Wednesday night (yes during the massive storm that saw the Sydney airport closed ten minutes before I was due to take off).

The quick trip provided several ponderous opportunities which I’ll be sharing over the coming weeks. In the meantime, this photo was taken from the focus group room I used in North Sydney (twitter followers will have already seen this).

Ponder this … how to keep ten strangers on topic, when outside all roads point to the Sydney Opera House?

Interestingly the night went very well, with everyone staying involved and taking turns to voice their opinions about various product, marketing, social media and website strategies.

On the last night, as I took a cab back to the hotel I pondered … can we become so used to seeing something, so sure it will always be there for us when we decide to re-engage with it, that we simply take it for granted? Even something as majestic as the Sydney Opera House? If we can become complacent about the Opera House, what hope do friends and family have?

What or who have you been taking for granted?

Here’s hoping this post might prompt some of you to pick up the phone, and call or text someone you haven’t made contact with for a while. If so I’d love to hear the outcome.
