Let’s be honest, has Guy Pearce ever let you down in a movie? No, and he doesn’t in his latest movie, Inside. However, it’s his castmates and the gritty, clever Australian story, that takes this outing beyond the usual prison-style movie and demands to be seen. Inside has a limited release on December 11 to 13 only, so don’t miss it.
When young Mel Blight (Vincent Miller) enters adult prison life gets interesting. His experience in juvenile detention serves him well, he knows to keep his head down, and his quiet, introverted personality certainly helps.
Once processed he’s place in a cell with Mark Shepard (Cosmo Jarvis) one of Australia’s most despised criminals.
Also in prison is Warren Murfett (Guy Pearce) who’s down to be released in a couple of months.
Mel quickly becomes an object of interest to others inside. Warren sees an opportunity to do a deal that will save Mel and benefit himself. Mel will be left alone as long as he takes care of Shepard. But Shepard has taken Mel under his wing and been opening up about the struggles in his life.
Inside, is an Australian movie to add to the list of great Aussie movies.
As the audience sat at the end of the movie taking it all in I pondered:
- Pearce adds another good performance to his list. But it is Jarvis who owns the movie with a Marlon-Brando-like look and performance;
- Young Miller is also impressive especially when you consider it’s his first movie. I’m definitely keeping an eye out for what he does next;
- The movie is a clever look at intergenerational trauma, mental health and father-son relationships;
- Don’t be put off by it being a prison-based story. While the movie begins as the usual prison-style movie it takes a sideways move into so much more.
