Based on a true story the latest Australian drama movie, He Ain’t Heavy uses a realistic hand to present a new perspective on the impact of drug abuse.
Jade (Leila George) has never been able to travel overseas. She’s too worried about her meth-addicted brother Max (Sam Corlett), always on call to take him to hospital or provide first aid after he’s self-harmed.
In desperation, she finally confines Max in a room inside the rural house left by their grandmother. But then Jade’s mother (Greta Scacchi) arrives, and she’s appalled that her son is caged like an animal.
As the audience clapped over the credits I pondered:
- It’s always good to see not just Australia, but Western Australia, on screen and hear the sounds of the bush;
- The acting is superb by both George and Corlett;
- It was interesting to see the topic from a different perspective;
- It’s easy to say the story was thin, but then it was based on a true story.
