Kid Snow the movie presents an intriguing look into the life of a boxing troupe family. Shot in WA and with strong performances from the leads, the movie is definitely worth a look.

Kid Snow (Billy Howle) was a promising young boxer with dreams of a professional career. He was also part of his fathers’ travelling boxing troupe. Moving around Western Australia in 1971, the mixed bag of performers would arrive in town, set up their tents and at nights end count the cash.

One night while driving his father and brother, a drunk Snow runs the car off the road and changes their lives forever. His father dead and his brothers boxing career over, the guilt sees Snow find solace in the bottle.

When single mother Sunny (Phoebe Tonkin) joins the carnival as a dancer, things get even more complicated between the brothers.

With the boxing troupe losing money Snow is given an opportunity to secure the troupes future and redeem himself in the process. All he has to do is fight his nemesis.

The movie Kid Snow explores the unknown history of a boxing troupe that tours outback towns allowing locals to try their luck. It’s an underdog story that sees a tent boxer take on a champion. The movie touches on family love, grief and there being more than one way to win at life.

As the audience broke out into spontaneous applause at the end, I pondered:

  1. I remember seeing Howle in The Beast Must Die and thinking who is this guy? When the movie started it took me a moment to realize it was him. Howle delivers another believable, emotional performance;
  2. Nice that the tent used in the movie was the real tent from 1924;
  3. It’s always a treat to have a movie filmed in your backyard, in this instance Kalgoorlie, Fremantle and the Claremont Showgrounds. How good do the WA sunsets look?;
  4. Even better to see your friends’ names in the credits (cough, Adriana);
  5. Also interesting to see a credit for “obscene shouter”. Is this a thing in all movies or just this one and if so how do you get that job?;
  6. One question, how many cigarettes died to make this movie?
