Bookworm is a delightful family movie about what makes a family, with Elijah Wood oozing vulnerability and fun in a strong performance.

Bookworm

Mildred (Nell Fisher) is on a quest. From the safety of her bedroom the 11-year-old is attempting to trap a ferocious beast. In this instance it’s the family cat, however this is just a trial run for the elusive Canterbury Panther. Anyone who proves the existence of the mythical creature wins $50,000. Having watched her single mother struggle all her life she’s intent on the prize.

When a freak accident sees her mother in hospital, her long-lost father Strawn Wise (Elijhad Wood) arrives on her doorstep to help.

Strawn has no experience as a parent, in fact he has little experience as a grown up, his only experience is as a washed-up magician.

Wise beyond her years Mildred convinces Strawn to take her camping, with the aim of finding the panther. Trapsing through the New Zealand wilderness the two strangers must learn to trust each other.

As you would expect the scenery in the movie is stunning. Fisher adds another strong performance to her growing career. Wood oozes vulnerability and empathy. A delightful family movie.
