Much loved comedy duo, The Umbilical Brothers have arrived in Perth for Fringe, with an encore performance of The Distraction.
Formed in 1988, The Umbilical Brothers, David Collins and Shane Dundas have been entertaining us with their unique comedy shows since the 90’s. Most of us remember their earlier shows combining mine and vocal sound effects. The current Fringe show The Distraction, is just as much fun but much harder to categorize.
As we entered the Fringe World Big Top at The Pleasure Garden, we could see the innerworkings of the show. The stage was set with green screens, cameras, television screens and copious props dotted about.
For ninety minutes we were transformed into their crazy world of giant babies, exploding heads, severed limbs and so much more. Their creativity so vast it extended beyond earth to outer space.
After sixty minutes of clever wordplay, mime, sound effects, puppetry, slapstick and some hilarious audience interaction I pondered as the crowd left:
- I don’t know how they crammed so much into one hour. What a work out;
- Not only did they have to set the show up and perform it, they had to pack it down in lightning speed so the next act could get on;
- If the camera comes your way, just run with it;
- The Umbilical Brothers never, ever disappoint.
