Fringe World Review: Wet by Hairy Godmothers

Three things intrigued me about this show. The title obviously but also the awards they’ve received and that it’s happening at the Perth Town Hall. I wasn’t expecting such an educational, uplifting experience.

Hairy Godmothers

The Hairy Godmothers are a group of five female comedy-cabaret performers who’ve proven themselves overseas in Europe and the UK as well as in Adelaide, Melbourne and at home. Now it’s our turn to see their latest adults-only show WET.

One of the things I love about Fringe is you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get, including a grown male laying an egg on stage, literally! Clearly a show called WET had me intrigued. As the blurb suggested would I be wetting myself with laughter, weeping a profound tear, or getting swept away in a deluge of pleasure? Or maybe all three?

The hour-long evening was introduced my one of several MC’s. Through a series of skits, dance and moving poems the team explored the “entanglement of femininity”, what a deliciously perfect phrase. Other memorable insights included “women learn their roles from society”, that “pleasure is a birthright”, and to remember to “forgive, breathe and smile.”

At the end of the hour I sat for a moment pondering:

  1. As shown in the phrases above, the writing is clever, tight and witty;
  2. Education is always easier to swallow with a spoonful of fun;
  3. It’s interesting to consider the fine line between women feeling empowered enough to show their naked vulnerabilities, quite literally, versus whether nudity is required to attract an audience in order to present a message of empowerment. Chicken and egg, I guess.
