Here’s my review. Bernie Dieter’s sublime Club Kabarett, held at the new purpose-built cabaret style L’Euro Grande, finished at 10.30pm. After mingling with the cast and wandering home through the city, I was still buzzing at 1.30am. That’s it. Surely that speaks for itself. DO NOT miss this show.
Bernie’s troupe of self-named “bohemians, punks and freaks” continues to set the bar for all other Fringe troupes. Don’t take my word for it, she arrived in Perth on the back of sell out shows around the world, including a smash hit three-month season in London’s West End. How lucky are we?
As in past years the ringmistress welcomed us into her domain with a cheeky tune that instantly set the tone. Her infamous haus band was in fine form and against all attempts our inhabitations quickly exited stage right. An evening of “celebrating our differences” had begun. [Note: If the person next to you is clutching her pearls it’s best she leaves now].
For two hours we forgot everything happening in our lives.
The evening was split into two acts, the brief intermission giving us time to catch our breath.
Over the night we were treated to: don’t try this at home fire acts; mind-bending trapeze; graceful silks; gender-bending pole work; stomach churning contortion, glitzy burlesque and a hair-raising ballerina, the memory of which will stay with you for ages. I think that’s everyone, apologies if I’ve forgotten anyone in my post-kabarett haze.
As we walked home through the city I pondered:
- Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett is the sublime, sensual love-in that today’s wounded world needs;
- Everyone needs a bit of Bernie’s Kabarett in their life;
- I was pleasantly surprised to see most of the crowd kept their phones in their pockets. No doubt, like me, they didn’t want to miss a second of the action on stage;
- The new venue passed the test, though the bar areas were a tad hot and it might’ve been where I was sitting, but the vocals were hard to hear at times, which was a shame because I know how clever they are;
- Is it wrong that during the brilliant contortionist act, I couldn’t help admiring her pedicure?
- Massive thank you to everyone who looked after us. From making sure my trike was securely stored, to people opening the door on the accessible toilets and loads of other staff having a chat.
Fringe continues to be one massive love-in. Until next time Ms Dieter.
