In recent years Woody Allen movies have been a bit hit and miss, well that’s my opinion anyway. Thankfully this latest romantic comedy movie, Coup de Chance, his first foreign language movie, lands in the hit category.
The gorgeous Fanny (Lou de Laâge) is living the life. She loves her job and her very successful husband Jean (Melvil Poupaud). They live in a palatial apartment in Paris. Life couldn’t get much better. As they face a future growing old together there are a few areas that they differ on but not many.
One day on her way to work Fanny runs into an old school friend Alain (Niels Schneider).
The pair haven’t seen each other since school, many years prior. They discuss the old days and the standard elements of marital status and employment.
Alain is in town for a short time to gain inspiration to finish his latest book. With more to discuss they decide to meet up for lunch. As you would expect the pair become closer.
Meanwhile Jean is oblivious, working hard, attending high-end parties and arranging hunting sessions in the country.
I don’t want to tell you anything else. What I can say is as the audience laughed out loud I pondered:
- It’s almost worth seeing this movie twice. Once to read the subtitles, the other to take in the golden dappled woods of Paris;
- Allen’s love of jazz comes through in the chilled soundtrack, that would be wonderful to have on tap at home;
- As you would expect there’s a lot of dialogue to read and at one point I was lulled into pondering whether the action needed to speed up, however at exactly that point something unexpected happened.
- The ending is so divine, made even better by the slow burn that goes before it. Very clever.
