Movie Review: The Miracle Club

If you’re over interest rates, rising prices and just worrying in general, I highly recommend escaping to the cinema. I can also recommend The Miracle Club movie. Full of brilliant actors, this movie will give you all the right feels.

The Miracle Club

The Miracle Club movie sees us journey back to 1968 Ireland a very different time to now. In the small community of Ballygar, life is lived with pride and sarcasm as the residents focus on making ends meet.

The movie centers on the women of the community who hold the family and indeed the township together. There is one thing however that would make them walk away from everything, a free trip to Lourdes.

Deep in faith, the women compete for a trip to the French Pyrenees and the healing possibilities Lourdes offers. All they have to do is win the church talent competition.

Having never been out of Dublin, close friends Lily Fox (Maggie Smith), Eileen Dunne (Kathy Bates), and Dolly Hennessy (Agnes O’Casey) decide to enter the competition. After a fierce battle they win and escape on a carefree adventure. But all is not smooth sailing.

Also on the trip is Chrissie Ahearn (Laura Linney) who returned, from a decades-long exile, to attend her mother’s funeral.

Along the way the group celebrate independence and friendship, however they’re also forced to reflect on their own lives, and the impact they’ve had on others.

The Miracle Club movie is about family, friendship, faith but mostly forgiveness and hope.

As the smiling audience filed out I pondered:

  • Yes, the storyline is a little predictable and everything gets tied up in a nice bow, but hey, who doesn’t need a reminder that life can be sweet sometimes?;
  • The central message that we need to have the strength to go on when there are no miracles, remains relevant for today;
  • What a delight watching such a stupendous group of actors. Bates and Smith are a wonderful;
  • It’s even more of a treat to see real faces full of laughter and life lines up on screen.
