If you’ve had enough of banks, then the Bank of Dave movie is for you. Not only a feel-good fun movie, it’s based on the true story of a man starting his own bank so you know … just saying.
.
Much loved Burnley local Dave Fishwick (Roy Kinnear) is doing well. So well in fact, the self-made millionaire has been lending money to other locals doing it tough after the 2008 financial crisis. When one of those locals suggests he set up a bank, things start to get interesting.
Turns out a new banking license hasn’t been issued for over 100 years and never to a working-class bloke like Fishwick.
Before you think Fishwick is a greedy manipulator after more riches, his plan is to return any profits to his much-loved community. But first he must take on the elitist British banking system.
While driven by the desire to help the community, Fishwick is equally motivated by upsetting the system or at least shining a light on its limitations.
To help out, Fishwick hires Hugh (Joel Fry) who, being a lawyer and from London, receives a frosty welcome. Despite these shortcomings local doctor Alexandra (Phoebe Dynevor) can’t help warming to him.
Bank of Dave, the movie is a feel good David and Goliath story. A welcome place to hang out for a couple of hours and forget about our own escalating interest rates.
As the credits rolled I pondered:
- Who doesn’t love a David and Goliath story? From the director and writer of the Fisherman’s Friends movie, this was always going to be a tale told with great heart;
- Kinnear does a good job of representing an everyday man with a dream;
- Hugh Bonneville and Angus Wright play the parts of banking toffs, Sir Charles and Clarence, to perfection;
- It was great to see Joel Fry in a different role. I first saw him as a hapless servant in the delightful Plebs;
- The cast lists another of my favourites Paul Kaye. Weirdly I can’t remember him in the movie. Either his part was small, or he was so good he completely disappeared. Maybe someone can let me know;
- It’s amazing to think that this movie was based on the true story;
- What a perfect time to launch a movie like Bank of Dave.
