Movie Review: Mafia Mamma

Mafia Mamma, the movie is a perfect fun romp, a satire of The Godfather that you cannot refuse. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen any Godfather movies, just don’t own up to it.

Mafia Mamma Movie

Kristin (Toni Collette) is your average suburban American woman. She lives with her musician partner, her son has just left for college, she works hard for a boss who puts her male colleagues before her and she works out to keep in shape.

During one of her self-defense work out sessions she confides in her lawyer best friend. Her grandfather Don Giuseppe Balbano (Alessandro Bressanello), who she’d only met when she was a young girl, had passed away and she’d been called to Italy for the funeral. With the airfare paid her friends tells her to go, but she isn’t sure. That is until she goes home earlier than expected.

Finding her partner in a comprising position she decides a trip to Italy might be just what she needs. In her mind she’ll be playing out an Eat Pray Love fantasy.

On arrival in Calabria she meets a gorgeous stranger at the airport, things are looking up for the fantasy. But then she is whisked away to the funeral and following that to the family home.

There she meets family advisor Bianca (Monica Bellucci), cousin Fabrizio (Eduardo Scarpetta) and several henchmen. After a while she learns her grandfather’s true profession, head of the Mafia empire. As she’s just getting a grip on that she learns that as his only heir she is now the head to the empire.

A series of hilarious and in some cases gruesome events Kristin beings to earn respect from the Firm’s trusted consigliere.

As the audience laughed out loud I pondered:

  1. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to believe Collette as I’d seen her in so many movies and interviews. It’s a testament to her skill that I was soon invested in her character;
  2. The supporting cast were fantastic. Alfonso Perugini in particular was a delight as one of the henchmen;
  3. It’s wonderful to sit in a cinema and hear the crowd laughing along with you;
  4. Mafia Mamma is a perfect antidote to the stress we’re living in. Definitely a fun romp you cannot refuse.
