With increasing lending rates, food prices and Covid cases, Falling for Figaro is the perfect feel-good romantic comedy to get lost in at the moment. Set in the fierce world of opera singing competitions it couldn’t be further from out day to day life.
Millie (Danielle Macdonald) has it all. She’s a brilliant young fund manager with an equally success long term boyfriend. One day she voices her desire to leave her unfulfilling job and chase her lifelong dream of becoming an opera singer. When she senses her boyfriends less than sympathetic reaction it’s enough to make her rethink her future.
When she reads about an upcoming competition Singer of Renown, for potential opera singers she seizes the opportunity.
Leaving her job behind but still with her boyfriend, she takes off to the Scottish Highlands to begin intense vocal training lessons with a renowned but fearsome singing teacher and former opera diva Meghan Geoffrey-Bishop (Joanna Lumley).
Upon arrival it becomes clear that she is not Bishops’s only student, she is also tutoring Max (Hugh Skinner), who is training for the same competition. A fierce rivalry quickly develops.
Will Millie make it to the competition? First she was to survive Bishop’s training.
Falling for Figaro is the ideal antidote to a busy week and the current preponderance of negative news. As the happy crowd wandered out I pondered:
- Lumley is delicious as the snarky teacher;
- I’ve seen McDonald in a few TV series and it’s nice to see her on the large screen and in a different role. Evidently she’s doing really well overseas which is brilliant. Keep an eye out for her work;
- Similarly you might recognise Skinner from various comedy roles including some very good BBC series where he plays the innocent fool way to well.
