A Scottish drama, love story that plays out like a mystery, Nobody Needs To Know is a surprise package movie definitely worth seeing.
The movie opens with us meeting Phil (Bouli Lanners) working as a labourer on a farm in the harsh Scottish Isle of Lewis. Phil is your classic strong, silent middle-aged man who’s clearly not afraid of hard work.
The farm belongs to Millie’s (Michelle Fairley) father. Millie is a middle aged woman known by some in the small, remote town as “ice cream” because she’s perceived as cold.
One day Phil leaves his workmates to go for a walk on the beach. When he’s found face down in the sand he’s taken to the hospital and diagnosed as having suffered a stroke. Physically he’s fine but mentally he can’t recall anything.
Millie takes care of him and when he asks who she is to him, she announces that they were together.
What follows is a powerful love story, played out with an element of mystery. Where they together? If not what happens when he finds out? As the movie goes on you wonder if she is telling the truth.
Nobody Has To Know is a gentle love story wrapped up as a mystery. The acting is a subtle as the scenery is spectacular.
As the credits rolled I pondered:
- Love a movie with a twist at the end;
- Watch out for the tender scene highlighting the power of simply holding someone’s hand;
- The movie is a reminder of living in the now.
