If your idea of an ideal holiday includes meandering around the dusty shelves of a tiny bookstore then you’ll want to watch this one. The documentary peaks into the world of rare books and the men and women who hunting them.
The movie introduces us to half dozen booksellers who guide us through the world of rare books. Each seller has his or her area of expertise along with a healthy dose of eccentricities.
Included in the mix are kings of the field such as Fran Lebowitz, Susan Orlean, and Gay Talese.
The booksellers also take us inside private deals and auctions where the prices are staggering.
But it’s not all about old books, the movie also left me pondering:
- The movie touches on the move from a male dominated industry to an increasing number of women in the profession. It was fascinating to listen to the young women who’d joined the profession.
- It was also interesting to hear about the focus on ‘collections’ not just books. That is all the notebooks, research and scraps of paper authors made while writing their books. I’ll take more notice when one of my writer friends scribbles something down on a wine coaster.
