The past year has seen something interesting happening along the east end of Hay Street. There’s a small stretch of hole in the wall sized cafes near near the Westin Hotel that’s becoming more and more interesting.
The first cafe I noticed along this strip was the Spring Cafe. Surprisingly I haven’t been there yet. Having opened up again after a recent renovation it’s on my list. In the meantime I dropped into East Cafe and Vietnamese Bistro prior to the Covid closures.
I’ve ridden past East Cafe many times and been enticed by their food board. An interesting range of breakfast options have caught my eye, particularly given the cheap prices. Would the quality match the price?
I opted for Bruschetta. But not just any bruschetta, this was avocado bruschetta.
To my surprise what arrived was a plate laden down with sourdough, cherry tomatoes, avocado, feta, and rocket. But that’s not all. Hidden underneath were two crunchy pieces of bacon. Just like the Spanish Inquisition I hadn’t expected that (sorry).
And the price just $15, anywhere else you’d pay at least $25.
The service was equally delightful and just the right amount.
The only downside is the lack of bathrooms, although there is one in the laneway behind the cafe, and the staff are more than happy to show you the way.
