Movie Review: Promised

Promised the movie offers a step back in time to Australia in the 1970’s when there was, patterned wallpaper, dubious fashion choices, big hair and for our two Italian lead characters, arranged marriages.

The story starts in 1950 Australia when Robert (Daniel Berini), a young Italian boy, innocently places a teddybear in a pram to calm a crying Italian baby girl, Angela (Antoniette Iesue). With that action their future is mapped out by their two fathers Sal (Paul Mercurio) and Joe (Mirko Grillini). For Sal it is the descent thing to do after Joe ensured Angela entered the world safely.

Twenty one years on, when Robert returns from working overseas things have changed. While he was away Angela has been studying, writing romance and reading Germaine Greers, The Female Eunuch. She also just happens to be in love with Tom (Santo Tripodi). What will become of the promise?

Robert is soon handed the keys to a new legal office, a car and house. A house he and Angela will reside in after the marriage. But is the marriage still on? And what are the consequences if it isn’t?

For Angela, and more importantly her boyfriend Tom, one of those consequences is her godfather Joe, who happens to be a Godfather in every sense.

There is little that can be done.

Promised was the perfect antidote to a full on week of work. A simple story told amongst nostalgic scenes of 1970’s Australia.

As the credits rolled I pondered:

  • It was nice to see Paul Mercurio on screen again, along with Tina Arena.However it was Mirko Grillini who shone as an understated godfather;
  • Go for the 70’s references. Stay for the real footage during the credits and the true story of the Director being promised;
  • A nice way to wind down.
4.5 Nice Sunday afternoon movie
  • overall 4.5
