To be honest I didn’t hold high hopes when I received the invitation to the Long Shot movie. I thought I knew what I was going to get. Turns out I grossly underestimated this one. Long Shot was an hilarious romantic comedy surprise. Go see it.
Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron) is living the dream as Secretary … of State. Highly intelligent and with more poise and style than any Vogue model, she has it all. If that’s not enough there’s the fact that the President has decided to retire, and has tapped her on the shoulder as a potential runner. All her childhood dreams and more are coming true.
Meanwhile Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) is a free-spirited journalist who’s not afraid to speak his mind or write it, particularly when he disagrees with the establishment. When his newspaper gets taken over he chooses to follow his ethics rather than the money.
Outwardly it would appear that they have nothing in common. But they have a secret.
Years ago Charlotte was Fred’s babysitter and first crush.
When the two run into each other at a party Charlotte is confronted with how far she has moved away from her youthful ideals. Consequently when she finds herself in need of a speechwriter, she turns to someone who knows her well, some one she can trust, Fred.
As they begin the campaign Fred is clearly punching above his weight, however it isn’t long before he proves to be the most valuable member of the team, and not just for his writing.
To be honest both Theron and Rogen are not my most favourite actors, and I can usually only take Rogen movies in small doses. I also thought it would be a hard task to think about this couple romantically. It’s a testament to both of them that they don’t just pull it off, they do so brilliantly.
- There are several very funny scenes, including the best inter country negotiation techniques
- I left thinking I’d seen Something About Mary in reverse, or Something Like Mary meets Kevin Klines, Dave
- Definitely worth going to.
In Cinemas – 2 May. Event Cinema. and Luna Cinema
