For anyone who saw That Sugar Film you’ll want to line up to see Damon Gameau’s latest movie, 2040 when it opens in May. If you can’t wait then check out the Q and A with the director at the end of this month.
In this documentary Gameau once again wonders about his family’s future, this time focusing on the health of the environment they’ll live in, rather than their own.
Looking through the eyes of his 4 year old daughter as she grows up, Gameau asks the question, how can we help address the issue with what we have available right now?
While there are some difficult images to take in, the film concentrates on what the future could look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet positive results.
Gameau’s draws on his Python-esk documentary style to help ease the message, and it works.
Sitting in an audience of teachers, as they clapped their approval I pondered:
- It was pleasing to note how many initiatives are already in place or well on their way in Perth;
- I love the way the experts are shown as tiny versions of themselves.
- Fantastic to hear the film will be part of the school curriculum;
- Great to see Gameau acknowledge the fact that he flew around the world while making the documentary.
- Make sure you stay until the credits.
- Have loved this guy since his initial Tropfest movies.

There will be a Q and A with the director April 26th and 28th.
