The Chaperone movie is an intriguing tale based on the true story of Louise Brooks. Aside from a fascinating tale it highlights how little things have changed.
Louise Brooks (Haley Lu Richardson) is a talented young dancer in the 1920’s who gets invited to attend a highly respected New York dance academy for the summer. Only trouble is she needs a chaperone.
Kansas woman Norma (Elizabeth McGovern) decides to take on the challenge of accompanying the head-strong 15 year old.
It soon becomes obvious that while one of them is running towards her future the other is seeking answers from her past.
The Chaperone is a gentle love story about ambition, secrets and with a new perspective on success. As I walked back to my car I pondered:
- The movie is a great reminder that we have no idea what really happens behind closed doors;
- As the themes emerged it was fascinating to consider how many issues remain today, infidelity, sexuality and abuse to name a few;
- Make sure you stay for the credits to see photos of the real dancer who went on to become a writer and actor.
For the readers out there, the movie is based on Laura Moriarty’s best-selling novel, THE CHAPERONE.
