With a myriad of Christmas lunches ahead it was nice to end November with something poles apart from the usual meat and three veg. What I hadn’t banked on was that one meal would inspire a new love of Greek food.
I’ve driven past this restaurant so many times it was great to finally walk through its doors. Actually that was the first surprise. The decor is interesting in itself. There’s the outdoor area, but step inside and you enter a dark bar, reminiscent of a groovy hidden basement bar.
Around the corner are couple of alcoves that open onto a large dining room.
But we’re here to talk about the food. Having little knowledge of Greek food I left the ordering to my companion who’d been before. We started with the hummus and cuttlefish dip. This was honestly the best hummus I’ve ever eaten. I’d go back for that alone.
Next up beetroot cured salmon, which was hit and miss. While I liked it my companion, not so much.
The famous pan fired cheese and Greek figs dish was a hit with both of us. Absolutely delicious!!
So too was the pumpkin salad, which was a treasure trove of goodness.
At the end of every good meal there’s always the need for something sweet, isn’t there? Well we decided a little something sweet would top the lunch off nicely. I ordered the famous Greek donuts (served with rich chocolate sauce and ice cream). Why wouldn’t you?
My companion ordered the equally well known custard cigars. What we hadn’t banked on was the serving size. Both of us envisaged one or two small sweet morsels. Not so. Needless to say we were thrilled to hear the restaurant wasn’t adversed to a doggie bag.
As we staggered out and hugged goodbye I pondered:
- It’s always great to try new things and even better when they turn out to be soooo good;
- So many of these dishes I’d return for on their own, the salad, the hummus, the cheese dish, the desserts. Put them all together and I’m gone;
- Who knew I had such a love for Greek food?
- I’m so pleased this restaurant isn’t closer to where I live as I can see those custard cigars being my downfall.
