If you loved What We Do In The Shadows or The Hunt for The Wilderpeople you’ll probably have already seen The Breaker Upperers movie. If not I suggest you catch it while it’s still in the cinemas and then look up the others.
The Breaker Upperers has a simple premise, what if you could outsource the end of your relationship?
Best friends Jen (Jackie van Beek) and Mel (Madeleine Sami) came up with the idea fifteen years ago after discovering they were dating the same man. The idea grew and they eventually formed The Breaker Upperers, a small business helping patrons do the uncoupling for them, at a price.
Now they’re in their late-thirties, still single and business is booming.
But what if one of them no longer wants to be single? And what if she starts developing a conscience about the impact on the broken upped?
The whole business model is threatened, and with it their friendship.
The Breaker Upperers is such a simple idea you wonder why it hasn’t been done before. Sami and van Beek put in excellent comedic performances, as does the ever reliable Australias’ Celia Pacquola.
Running at 1 hour 30 minutes it is not a long movie, and I must admit that it is extensively one gag that runs really well for about three quarters of the movie, then falls away a little at the end. Still it’s definitely worth a view, particularly if you are about to or have recently gone through a break up.
As the audience giggled along I pondered:
- How many people will take their partners to the movie and then say, ‘by the way, remember the scene where…’;
- Go for the most cringe worthy sex scene you’ll ever see;
- You can feel Taika Waititi’s delightful touch in the background;
- Remember to keep an eye out for these girls.
