I can’t think of a better movie to recommend for the school holidays than Early Man, and that’s for adults as well as kids. If you liked Wallace and Gromit, and enjoyed Chicken Run you will love Early Man and that’s no exaggeration, I’ve not been paid to say this.
Early Man is the latest offering from mega talented Nick Park. It tells the tale of Stone Age Man, a little tribe living happily in their space of the world.
Enter Bronze Age Man headed up by Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddlestone) who has other plans for their little patch of green.
Banished to the outer reaches the little tribe seems resigned to their fate. That is until we get to know more about Dug (Eddie Redmayne) and his ever faithful ‘dog’ Hognob. After much angst a challenge is set, Dug and his tribe are given an opportunity to win back their land, but how can this rag tag group compete against the might of the well funded Bronze Age group? I can’t say much more, but I can tell you that Goona (Maisie Williams) helps.
David and Goliath battles are well known but all the others were easily forgotten as I got completely lost in the story.
As I giggle over the trailer once again, I ponder:
- The characters are adorable as usual;
- The finesse required behind the making of the movie is still mind blowing;
- The messages of teamwork, bullying, following your dreams, progress and the environment are there but not laid on with a trowel;
- I could have sworn Lord Nooth was voiced by Sacha Baron Cohen;
- The jokes are brilliant, I’ve retold some of the commentators (Rob Brydon) comments several times (am not going to spoil it for you) and the duck sequence is priceless, I’ll be going back just to see this one again.
Early Man is out now.
