Regular readers will know my passion for making sure people get enough ‘Me Time’. A few months ago it was finally time to take some of my own medicine, besides a Crown gift card (given to me from friends at the beginning of the year) was threatening to expire without being used. Crown was offering one of its Ultimate Lunch and Pool pass deals, and the last time I went to Bistro Guillaume I felt like a princess. It was time to check it out again.
Walking through the front doors of the Bistro and into the gorgeous restaurant is always a thrill, as are the French ascents. Without realising it I’d dressed in a very French black and white stripped top, which the waitress said made me look ‘very Chanel’, as she directed me to a prime window seat.
I’ve had the Ultimate Lunch package before and so the only decision was entre and main or main and dessert, silly question. Order placed I was offered a complimentary drink (soda and lime), complimentary bread and French butter, the butter oozing into the warm bread. I could already feel my shoulders returning to their normal position.
Next up the main course, fresh whiting cooked until the edges had garnered a slight crunch, delicious (photo above). Served in a smoked tomato consume drizzled with parsley oil, the smoking gave it a unique flavour. I actually forgot it was tomato. The shaved mushrooms had a nice crunch, but it was the cabbage mixture that was a real surprise. The whole meal was so good I had to eat really slowly as I didn’t want it to end.
After a short break the dessert arrived. A rich, smooth vanilla cream brulee topped with the thinnest, crispest toffee lid. The satisfaction of shattering the lid was only over shadowed by the stunning texture of the custard. The apple sorbet was refreshing and included surprising small cubes of apple. The small donuts were light, fluffy, and crunchy.
As I sat watching the crowd jumping onto blow up swans on the pool I pondered:
- Bistro Guillaume continues to be one of my favourite moments to run away and hide for some Me Time.
- Brilliant idea to have small donuts … you can eat them guilt free.
