It’s been quite a while since I’ve been to Veggie Mama, too long actually. I finally managed a return visit the other day and was just as blown away as the first time.
Just off the main drag of Beaufort Street sits Veggie Mama, a small café that’s been quietly offering serious vegetarian food for many years. There are three sitting areas – outside, the lower deck and an upper deck where you place your order.
On the upper deck the first thing you see is the overwhelming range of veggie patties. I was oscillating between the mushroom and walnut or the beetroot and bean options, mushroom won out.
The range of salads were equally impressive.
The result was a mushroom pattie with ‘side’ salad. The salad was a meal in itself … pumpkin, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, capsicum, quinoa, beans, you name it
There was absolutely no way I could finish it. I ended up taking half the meal home in a container they were more than happy to provide saying ‘we like it when people ask for containers, we hate throwing away food‘. Sadly there was absolutely no thought of any of the sweet options.
There was however time to just sit and watch the world go by while my stomach attempted to accommodate its new house guests.
Eventually, as I wandered down the road past the famous statue I pondered …
- The plastic container in my hand was a reminder that I’d just purchased two meals for less than $15, when does that happen?
- My meal seemed to have included every vegetable known to man, or at least this woman.
- I’m looking forward to going back to try the beetroot pattie.
- Gorgeous, fresh food with unusual flavours and textures. Still one of the best if not the best veggie café near the city.
Gorgeous, fresh food with unusual flavours and textures for a brilliant price.
