50,000 bees enter Art Gallery: PICA Radical Ecologies

Another piece worth seeing, or is that experiencing, at the next PICA Radical Ecologies exhibition is lying down with bees, 50,000 bees to be exact.

The piece was born out of a Ukrainian folklore about the health of bee keepers. Artist Mike Bianco invites the audience to lie down on his bee bed.

A funnel on the wall allows the bees to leave the hive situated outside and enter the gallery. As you lie there you can sense, smell and hear the bees.

As I lay there listening to the happy hum underneath me I pondered:

  1. If anyone has ever fallen asleep with 50,000 bees underneath them.
  2. It was fascinating to watch the bees crawl down the rope and then back up the tube. The rope was included so they didn’t slip down the tube.

PICA Radical Ecologies runs from Sept 4th 2016 10am – 5.00pm. Free.
