I love finding a place that offers late breakfast, for me it’s one of the most joyous meals you can have. So you can imagine how pleased I was to stumble across Health Freak café in Mount Lawley which serves breakfast until 2pm. The café also introduced me to my new favourite drink, green tea latte.
Health Freak Café is situated on busy Beaufort Street. If you park out the back you can walk through Beaux Lane which is beginning to take shape. No doubt I’ll be blogging more about this in the future.
First impressions … out the front of the café are some cute seats where you can sit and watch the world go by.
Inside and seated I was confronted by a huge menu. There were paleo, vegetarian, vegan and high protein options for almost every dish, most priced between $14 and $18.
Apart from the usual breakfast items, the menu offered a range of Breakfast Bowls. These combined coco whip soft serve with berries and granola, or a chocolate dream, each for around $15. Other options were a Chai or Dragon Fruit Bowl.
In the end I opted for the Bruschetta. This came with two poached eggs, a lot of tiny pieced of diced tomato, red onions (maybe a few too many), feta and balsamic dressing served on a gorgeous blue plate. With two piece of toast it cost $18.50.
The lunch menu contained burgers, salads, pastas and tapas.
They haven’t left out the meat eaters who could add protein to a vegetarian meal or opt for a chicken salad, Thai beef salad or pulled pork sliders.
The cafe also offered a wide range of juices, shakes, protein and superfood smoothies for around $10, along with weight loss and detox drinks for $8.
But it was the range of hot drinks that most interested me.
For starters you can choose the type of milk, from soy to almond and even steamed coconut. Then there were the flavours. Forget your decaf soy flat white. Even a simple chai is parse. I’ve already given you my take on the Tumeric latte on an earlier post, here it comes topped with honey. There was also a Red Latte topped with cinnamon and honey. And then there was the Green Tea Latte!
Macha Green Tea Latte is the latest new thing, evidently. The question remained … would curiosity get the better of me, again?
The colour was far greener than any cup of green tea I’d ever made, but this was Macha green tea. The taste was rich, earthy and definitely something I’ll be trying again.
When you place your order at the front counter you can’t help but notice the cabinet full of cakes, raw cakes thankfully.
The décor is clean industrial with two types of seated areas including a bench looking straight out at busy Beaufort Street. The service is friendly.
As I sipped my green tea and looked out at the cars banked up outside I pondered:
- With so many different options on the menu it will be interesting to come back and get out of my comfort zone a few more times.
- Mind you some of the raw cakes looked a bit ponderous, like the green-blue tinged mint cheesecake, will I be that brave?
