For month’s I’ve been trying to find time to explore Mrs S café in Maylands. Sadly, it still hasn’t happened. What has happened though, while I’ve been slack is, the mountain has come to Mohammad, Mrs S has opened in Highgate.
While the Maylands store usually has massive lines out the front thankfully that’s not the case in the Highgate café strip. Most likely this could be due the competition nearby, though I’m guessing it could also be because people are still finding out that it’s there.
Anyone who went to raw food café Solomon’s will recognise some of the décor aspects, like the brick walls and the chilled vibe. They’ve also kept the outdoor area out the back.
Unlike Solomon’s the food is not confided to raw produce. The menu is the same at the Maylands outlet and presented in cut colouring in books, the page held open by pegs.
I was thrilled to find another cafe offering real chai tea made with tea leaves. Also pleasing was the fact it was served in a teapot and cup not a hard to hold hot glass.
As I was between lunch and dinner I opted for a savoury muffin. The muffin was huge, dense and full of flavour, rich pumpkin with a chill after taste. At first I thought I’d take half home for dinner but then I starting eating it and realised that wasn’t going to happen.
The service was knowledgeable, and casual with just the right level of friendliness.
As I wandered down the street attempting to walk off some of the full feeling in my belly I pondered…
- While it was sad to see Solomon’s go, Mrs S is a solid replacement.
- The cakes look delicious and well worth a second visit.
- I’m always taken by a place that offers all day breakfast. The granola, eggs on brioche will serve them well in Highgate.
- Even the toilet was chilled, like a Swedish steam room.
- Get there before the crowd finds out.
