It’s not often you get to visit cloud nine let alone review it but that’s exactly what I did the other day and I can say it lived up to its name in every way.
Situated on the ever growing Angove Street café strip in North Perth, the café opened late last year. Once inside you’re spoilt for choice about where to sit. Just inside is an area where you can sit and watch the passing parade out on the street.
Next up a space that would be perfect for a family dinner, a birthday or an office meeting.
Finally out the back is the perfect spot for a Bookclub meeting, to watch the kitchen or just to zen out.
And then there’s the food. It has to be said that Cloud Nine is a Vegan and Vegetarian café but don’t stop reading. Whatever you do, do not let that put you off. I was just in time for a late lunch. I decided on a small salad bowl so I could check out the chocolate cake that was screaming at me from the front bench.
The bowl was crammed full of vegetables, from what I could tell there were potatoes, spinach, corn, pumpkin and red onions. The cumin mayonnaise gave it a fascinating unique, very moreish flavour. Who knew you could get so filled up by such a small bowl. The salad was one of the best I’ve ever eaten, honestly, and at only $8 it was fantastic value.
And then came the chocolate cake. Rich and dense it was utterly tempting, I had to stop myself from taking another spoonful when my stomach was screaming for mercy. When I finally conceded and said I couldn’t finish it, the staff were more than happy to give me a box to take the other half home.
My adventurous spirit well and truly ignited, I heard myself saying yes to a Turmeric latte made with homemade almond milk. Not wanting to be too heroic though I opted for a weak version just in case. The result? A descent sized mug, rather than a midsized glass that’s too hot to pick up, containing a warm milky liquid with a slight yellow tinge and an devilishly earthy flavour.
The service was as good as the food. They were more than happy to take time explaining the menu, have a chat and hold back delivering the cake and latte until after I’d finished the salad.
The café is full of inspirational quotes about ‘count your blessings’, ‘slowing down and taste the goodness’ etc., and that’s exactly what I did. Even the magazines focused on sustainability which was a nice change from reading about the horrors of the day in the newspaper.
Cloud Nine is good food, that’s great value, served in a blissed out setting. I can’t wait to go back for some more Me Time and then maybe, if I’m feeling generous, share it with some friends. It’s about to be open on some evenings too. For more information go to Cloud Nine.
