Review: Petition Kitchen

A quick midweek catch up in the heart of the city meant I finally got to see Petition Kitchen, what a treat.

Just inside the door and off to the right is a ‘Beer Corner’ bar where you can sit and wait for your friends to arrive. The ‘bar’ is the first indication that things are going to be different here. How many times are bar staff separated from patrons by just a long table?

Inside the restaurant you’re faced with a row of bench seating down one wall. On the night I went there were a lot of couples however tables can be pushed together for larger tables. If this style of seating doesn’t suit you can always move to another section closer to the front door.

But all the seating arrangements and minimalist industrial décor is forgotten once the food arrives. I chose the fish of the day. The fish was perfectly cooked and served with cod roe, muscles, zucchini, pickled garlic and olive oil. I’ve never had zucchini served in small five cent piece rounds that were crunchy outside with a soft centre, absolutely delicious, the highlight of the dish. What a beautiful tasting dish on a gorgeous plate.

My guest opted for the lamb rump which was paired with burnt aubergine, black quinoa and cashew. It too was very well received, though I’m afraid I can’t give you a description as we had too much else to discuss.

Both mains were around $35 which is reasonable compared to other Perth venues, especially considering the quality of the produce and presentation. The service was well focused, friendly and not pushy, just what you need when you have a lot to catch up on.

With no room for dessert it was a quick chai latte and then off to explore the rest of the venue.

As I caught a cab home I pondered …

  1. Perth restaurants are really stepping up lately. Like Rambla On Swan I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting our fair city.
  2. It was fascinating to watch the middle aged couple on the table next to us strike up a conversation with the couple sitting next to them. This wasn’t a quick brief chat it ended up being an indepth discussion with all shifting there chairs to chat more.
  3. One strange thing was that there was only one toilet and I must admit the tiles made it feel a bit like a padded cell.

So many beautiful sitting areas outside the restaurant, make sure you take a walk around. More on these spaces later.
