Guilt free muffins in Perth at Jam café

Sometimes it’s the little unassuming places that give you the biggest surprises. That’s what happened recently during what was meant to be a quick half hour catch up with a colleague.

Wedged in between various chores I had a quick catch up with a colleague to see where a project was at. Time meant we picked the most central and obvious landmark that neither of us could miss … Ikea.

Nestled in front of the consumer behemoth is a small unobtrusive café called Jam. It’s been open for a while now, catering to the hungry patrons working in the Government offices perched on top of it.

I’m pleased to say that the interior is still as fresh, light and welcoming as the first time I went there many months ago.

The spread of food looked good and the service was like you were visiting a family member.

What was surprising though was the muffin. I didn’t expect to find the best muffin I’d ever eaten, and it was guilt-free.

When I was told the range of raspberry, blueberry et al, I paused to ponder my decision a little more. Fully aware of the bad calorific wrap the standard muffins get, I knew I couldn’t afford the calories. But then I was told that these muffins were made on the premises and the chef used water and yoghurt. Nothing ventured as they say … I picked raspberry.

The result was an incredibly light and moist muffin.

It was nothing like the often dry muffins that need margarine to help them slide down. The Chia Soy Latte was equally impressive. I don’t know what their secret is but it also had a unique creamy flavour.

Carrying on the healthy theme Jam also offers a cute and very different style of ‘breakfast-on-the-go’.

There were only two things I was left pondering …

  1. When can I pass  by that way again to try another muffin?
  2. Why oh why was Ikea car park full to the brim on a Monday at 10am?

Next time you’re near Ikea make sure you drop into Jam, check out the cool lights and try a muffin.
